A toxoplasmose congênita está associada a considerável morbidade quando não tratada. A partir do momento da descoberta de anticorpos IgM específicos contra Toxoplasma gondii em lactentes, a determinação do diagnóstico da infecção inclui a detecção de anticorpos IgM específicos contra este protozoário no soro do recém-nascido. No entanto, ainda não foi definido se esse teste apresenta diferenças e quão robusto ele é em diferentes populações e localidades. Os doutores Lago, Oliveira e Bender descreveram sua experiência com a presença de IgM contra T. gondii em soros obtidos de lactentes infectados congenitamente e cujas mães foram testadas no pré-natal, ou mães e bebês foram testados ou somente bebês foram testados, no período neonatal em um programa de triagem. Eles também observaram por quanto tempo ainda é possível detectar a imunoglobulina M anti-T. gondii no soro de crianças com toxoplasmose congênita, em um estudo cuidadosamente realizado e bem descrito.
